## The Uncomfortable Truth About CSC Costs
Most articles about CSC founding talk about "five-figure amounts." That's the half truth at best. Anyone who wants to professionally establish and operate a Cannabis Social Club needs to plan with a six-figure budget — and that's before the first gram of cannabis is harvested.
This article is based on our own experience founding BlattWerk e.V. in Hildesheim. Specific numbers vary by state, location, and planned grow size.
## Founding Costs (One-Time)
**Association Founding & Legal:** Notary fees for statute certification: €200–500. Association register entry: €75–100. Legal review of statutes: €1,500–3,000. Legal advice for license application: €1,000–3,000. Criminal record checks for all board members: €13 each.
This block is the cheapest — yet many underestimate the legal costs. A faulty statute can delay the license application by months. The €2,000–3,000 for a legal review is the best investment in the entire founding process.
**Premises:** Rent deposit (3–6 months rent): €3,000–15,000. Renovation costs (access controls, security, electrical, plumbing): €10,000–40,000. Ventilation system with activated carbon filters: €3,000–8,000. Security technology (door locks, alarm system, video surveillance): €2,000–5,000.
Premises are the single largest cost item. The KCanG requirements for access controls, odor prevention, and security are strict. Plus: not every landlord rents to a CSC. Expect rejections and a longer search.
**Growing Equipment:** LED lighting systems: €5,000–15,000. Climate control (heating, cooling, dehumidification): €3,000–8,000. Irrigation system: €1,000–3,000. Substrates, pots, shelving, tools: €1,000–3,000. Seeds and clones: €500–2,000.
Equipment quality determines harvest quality. Cheap LED panels with insufficient PPFD lead to weak plants and low yields. Saving here costs more in the long run.
**Other:** Insurance (liability, inventory): €500–2,000/year. Accounting software and tax advisor: €500–1,500. Website and communications: €500–3,000. Addiction prevention concept (external consultation optional): €0–2,000.
## Ongoing Costs (Monthly)
**Rent:** €1,000–3,000/month (depending on location and space) **Electricity:** €500–2,000/month (LED lighting, climate control, ventilation — electricity consumption is systematically underestimated) **Materials:** €200–500/month (nutrients, substrates, consumables) **Insurance:** €100–200/month **Tax advisor:** €100–300/month **Maintenance:** €100–300/month
Total ongoing costs: **€2,000–6,000/month** — before a single gram of cannabis is harvested and distributed. This period typically lasts 4–8 months after license approval.
## Financing
The main source of financing is membership fees. At a fee of €10/month, you need at least 200–600 members to cover ongoing costs. During the founding phase, this won't be enough — you'll need either founding members contributing higher one-time amounts, or a loan.
The KCanG prohibits profit generation. Cannabis distribution to members occurs at cost price. The association may not generate profits — all income must cover operating costs.
## Our Honest Assessment
A Cannabis Social Club is not a cheap hobby. It's an association that must be run like a small business — with business costs but without the ability to generate profits. Those who underestimate this will fail.
