Plant Training: SOG, LST, Topping and FIM for Higher Yields

Plant training methods such as SOG, LST, topping and FIM can significantly increase yield per square metre. An overview of the most important techniques with pros and cons.

Untrained cannabis plants grow naturally in a Christmas tree shape: one dominant main stem with many small side branches. Plant training methods break up this natural structure so all shoots receive similar amounts of light.

## Low Stress Training (LST)

LST is the most beginner-friendly method. Shoots are gently bent horizontally using wire, cable ties or clips – no cutting. Suitable for autoflowering since no healing time is needed.

## Topping

The main shoot is cut off above the second or third node, producing two new main shoots. Requires 3–7 days recovery. Not recommended for autoflowering.

## FIM

A variant of topping where only about 75% of the tip is removed, producing 3–4 new shoots instead of 2. Less predictable than topping.

## SCROG (Screen of Green)

A horizontal net is stretched over plants; shoots are guided through and fixed horizontally until the net is evenly covered. Maximum light utilisation per square metre.

## SOG (Sea of Green)

Many small plants without intensive training, flipped to flower after just 2–3 weeks of veg. Shorter overall cycle but more plants required.

Recommendation for beginners: Start with LST. Risk-free, teaches plant growth patterns, and already delivers decent yield improvements.
