Storing Cannabis Safely: Child Safety and Quality Preservation

BlattWerk e.V. Editorial7 min readUpdated: 2026-06-17

Anyone storing cannabis at home has a responsibility – to minors in the household and to cannabis quality. Tips on childproof storage and optimal preservation.

The KCanG allows possession of up to 50 grams of cannabis at home – but also sets clear requirements: cannabis must be stored in a way that minors have no access. This is not an optional recommendation but a legal obligation.

## Legal Basis: § 10 KCanG

The Cannabis Consumption Act obliges adults to store cannabis so that it is not accessible to minors. Anyone who makes cannabis accessible to children or young people (even negligently) commits an offence.

## Childproof Storage Solutions

Lockable boxes: Metal lockboxes with combination or key lock are affordable and effective. Available online from approximately €20–40.

Safe: For larger quantities or special care. Small wall safes also offer optimal protection. Cost: €50–200.

Cannabis-specific lock containers: Child-resistant containers specifically designed for cannabis with child-safety closures. Often odour-proof and with hygrometer.

## Optimal Storage for Quality Preservation

Good storage not only protects against unauthorised access but also preserves cannabis quality. The main enemies of cannabis are: light (UV radiation), oxygen, moisture (too much or too little) and heat.

Light: UV light is the biggest quality killer. THC is broken down to CBN by UV radiation. Storage in the dark or in UV-blocking containers is essential.

Temperature: 15–21 °C is optimal. No refrigerator – humidity fluctuations when opening and closing are problematic.

Humidity: 59–63% relative humidity is the sweet spot for cannabis storage. Humidity packs (Boveda 58% or 62%) regulate automatically.

Oxygen: Airtight glass containers (Mason jars) are important. Vacuum sealing is even better for long-term storage.

## Labelling: Important for Safety and Quality

Cannabis that is not consumed immediately should be labelled: strain name, dispensing date, THC content. This prevents mix-ups and aids dosing.
