THC/CBD Ratio: How the Interplay Determines the Effect

BlattWerk e.V. Editorial8 min readUpdated: 2026-06-17

The ratio of THC to CBD is one of the most important factors for the effect profile. From 20:1 to 1:20 – what do these ratios mean and for whom are they suitable?

Many consumers look at THC content when purchasing – yet the THC/CBD ratio is at least as decisive for the effect profile. CBD modulates THC's effects in multiple ways, and different ratios suit different purposes and people.

## How CBD Modulates THC Effects

CBD partially competes with THC at CB1 receptors: it reduces anxiety and paranoia risk, has its own anxiolytic effects through 5-HT1A receptors, and slightly slows THC breakdown. Practically: a strain with 15% THC and 5% CBD typically feels more pleasant and less anxiety-inducing than one with 20% THC and 0% CBD.

## Common Ratios and Their Applications

- 20:1 (high THC / almost no CBD): Strongest psychoactive effect; highest anxiety risk. For experienced users with high tolerance. - 4:1 (high THC with some CBD): Rounded, balanced effect. Suitable for most recreational users. - 1:1 (balanced): The best-researched medical profile (Sativex). Moderate psychoactivity, broad therapeutic range. Good for beginners and medical use. - 1:4 (CBD-dominant): Barely psychoactive; full entourage effect. Medical applications, seniors, patients with psychosis risk. - Pure CBD: No high; therapeutic use, children (Epidiolex for epilepsy), those with absolute THC restrictions.

## Calculating the Ratio from Lab Reports

Total THC after decarb = THCa × 0.877 + THC Total CBD after decarb = CBDa × 0.877 + CBD

Divide to get the ratio. This gives far better orientation than THC content alone.
